Elsie Donna Newman, 86, died Jan. 17, 2018, at her home at Muddy Creek near Haines.

Her funeral will be Friday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Haines United Methodist Church with Sally Wiens officiating. Following the funeral, friends are invited to join the family for a reception at the Haines United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Elsie was born on Sept. 11, 1931, at Muddy Creek to Henry Walter and Ruby Faye (Ledbetter) Loennig. She attended Muddy Creek High School for the first two years then North Powder High School for the last two years and graduated in 1949. She then went to Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). While in college, she was a member of the sorority Alpha Xi Delta. She graduated in 1953.

In 1952, she married James Edgar Newman at Muddy Creek. Her main occupation was being a homemaker, but she also worked as a home economics teacher and substitute teacher.

She enjoyed quilting, sewing, spending time with her grandkids and she was an excellent cook. She was a member of the Mutual Improvement Club and was a 4-H leader.

Elsie is survived by her husband, James Newman of Muddy Creek; her daughters, Rebecca Neys and her husband, Joe, of St. Paul, Oregon, Angela Sherer and her husband, Bob, of La Grande, and Kathleen Von Striver of Oregon City; her son, Douglas Newman and his wife, Cynthia, of Baker City; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ruby Loennig; her daughter, Cynthia Diane Worcester; and her son, Eric Scott Newman.
