She is survived by her husband George David Smith, Jr. and their four children: Dustin, 23; Victoria, 19; Cameron, 17; and Samantha, 16, whom she loved and adored. After the death of her mother, she stayed with her sister Linda Hall and then was adopted by her sister and brother-in-law Don & Connie Smith in 1985, and is survived by her adopted siblings, Christina (Kent) Marcus, Jana (Steve) Roberts, and Jeff (Cassie) Smith. Other siblings include Gary (Debbie) Hines, Laverne Hines, Linda (Earl) Hall, and Marla (John) Keller. Other survivors include several nephews, nieces, and loving aunts & uncles.
Melanie was a member of West Mobile Baptist Church where she worked in the Child Development Center, the AWANA program, and the church nursery. She volunteered as a Band Mom with Mary G. Montgomery Viking Band. She taught piano lessons and also was the primary caregiver for her husband's Grandmother.
