He was the son of the late Bennie and Johnnie Bell Edwards Mathews. He accepted Christ and was baptized at True Vine Baptist Church.
He worked for Foley's Department in the line of carpeting for many years. Later he worked in constructing and was employed at Sunshine Landscaping Company until his passing.
