Michael V. Hickman, Ph.D. served as a nuclear engine machinist mate aboard the U.S.S. Nathan Hale during the Vietnam Conflict. He later completed his Ph.D. in Agronomy from North Dakota State University in 1988. He was a U.S. Department of Agriculture Weed Scientist (Weslaco, TX and Purdue University) and a high school Biology and Chemistry teacher most recently at McCutcheon High School in Lafayette, IN. He died in Seattle while seeking treatment for a rare blood cancer, Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML.)
