Mrs. Janice Blackburn Newman, 90, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018, peacefully at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Mrs. Newman was born January 21, 1928, in Surry County to the late Roy Blackburn and Inez Towe Blackburn.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 50 years and the owner and operator of Blackburn’s Nursery and Preschool for over 70 years, where she loved teaching children.

She was also a member of The Jonathan Hunt Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving is two daughters and sons-in-law: Tina and Stephen Gause and Renee and Michael Francis, all of Mount Airy; four grandchildren: Carol and Kendal Gause, Lauren and Jordan Francis; a brother, Donald Roy Blackburn of Mint Hill, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband, Porter Newman; two sisters: Willie Sue Shelton and Ernestine Chappell; and three brothers: Garnett Blackburn, Guy Blackburn, and Glen Blackburn.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 7, 2018, at 10:00 am at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy conducted by Rev. Alex Martin. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday night, June 6, 2018, from 6-8 pm at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of Ridgecrest Assisted Living for all their loving and caring support and much appreciation to Dr. Kinsley and all caring staff of Mountain Valley Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
