Census records indicate the following:
1870 Federal Census: District 15, Thornhill, Granger County, TN
Matilda Cardwell, age 35, mother
Richard Cardwell, age 18, son
Hendrickson Cardwell, age 15, son
Florence Cardwell, age 12, daughter
Lafayette Cardwell, age 9, son
Sidney Cardwell, age 6, son
Grainger County court records:
Florence Reddix marriage to Wm Monroe; July 28, 1875, Grainger County, TN (she was aprox 16 yrs old)
This is NOT the Florence Reddix that married William George Monroe of Union County, TN. There is a four-year age difference for these Florences. Though they both had daughters named Margaret ("Maggie" and "Gwen") who were both 1 in the 1880 Census, they are NOT the same person. THIS Florence had only two children at the time: Maggie and a 3-yr old named Lourella. The other Florence had four children in 1880: a 4-yr old named Lurilla, a son named Lee, and a daughter Jane, and Gwen.
Florence Cardwell Monroe only ever had 3 children: Lourella, Maggie, and Elmer (never a Lee or Jane)
1880 Federal Census: District 12, Grainger County, TN
Tilda Cardwell, age 44; head (Caroline Matilda)
Florence Monroe, age 20; daughter
Lafayette Cardwell, age 19; son (James Lafayette 'Lafe')
Sidney Cardwell, age 15; son (Sidney Albert Johnson)
Lourella Monroe, age 3; granddaughter
Maggie Monroe, age 1; granddaughter (possibly Margaret Gwen Cooper (b.1878-d.1934))
*another son was born to Florence in 1881 (or war records state: 1882): Elmer Ulysses Lafayette Monroe (my great-grandfather)
It is uncertain where her husband William Monroe was during the 1880 Census,
as he was NOT the William Monroe in the 1880 'Union County' Census (listed as having a wife: Florence; and daughters: Jane 9, Lurilla 4, Gwen 1; and son: Lee 6) because that wife Florence (b. 1856-57) was listed as being 24 while THIS Florence was only 20 (b. 1859-60).
