Geraldine Hedgecock, 90, of Everest, died Thursday afternoon, April 14, 2005, at Midland Hospice in Topeka where she had been a patient for two weeks. She had been a resident of the Tri County Manor in Horton for nearly two years.

She was born Feb. 26, 1915, West Frankfort, Ill., one of three children of George and Velma Lathem Clem. Geraldine grew up there where she attended schools and graduated from high school. She later attended Southern Illinois University, finishing her teaching degree at Peru State Teacher's College, Peru, Neb. She taught school for a total of 44 years before retiring in 1984. Most of her teaching career was spent in the Horton-Everest schools, in the first or second grade classrooms.

Mrs. Hedgecock was a member of the Robinson United Methodist Church prior to transferring to the Everest United Methodist Church until it closed. She currently was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Horton. Geraldine was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Sorority where she had served as president; the Brown County Retired Teachers Association; and professional teaching organizations at the national and state levels as NEA and KNEA.

She was married to Leland F. Hedgecock, Feb. 19, 1955, at Lee's Summit, Mo. They lived in the Mt. Zion Community, northeast of Hiawatha prior to living in Robinson. The moved to Everest in 1968 to make their home. He died Feb. 20, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother John Clem in 1961; and a sister Virginia Hedgecock in 2000.

Survivors include two sons Brian Hedgecock and wife Madonna, of Topeka, Lon C. Eubanks, of California; a niece Marta DeAngelis and husband Louis, of Corpus Christi, Texas; a nephew Kim Hedgecock, of Kansas City, Mo.; and several cousins.

Funeral services were planned for 11 a.m. Monday April 18, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Burial followed at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in the Mt. Zion Community, northeast of Hiawatha.
