Waynesville - Thomas Leon Hooper, age 80, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003 at his home in Waynesville.
The son of the late Thomas Reuben and Dolly Gosnell Hooper, he was born on Aug. 24, 1923 in Barberton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by one brother, Otto Hooper.
Mr. Hooper served mankind in many ways. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1983 after serving in World War II with the Fleet Airwing #7 Antisub and Antiship operation in Dunkeswell, England. He was an area manager for Suburban Propane for 38 years. He was also instrumental in forming the Haywood County Rescue Squad, where he was a captain for 18 years and a member from 1957 to 1977. He was also a member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Gracie D. Pipkin Hooper of Waynesville; one son, Geoffrey K. and his wife, Sue, Hooper of Stony Point; one step daughter, Dianna D. Crumpler of Portsmouth, Va.; one step son, Timothy W. Davenport of Suffolk, Va.; four sisters, Mamie Raby of Franklin, Velma Plemmons of Sylva, Naomi Green of Anchorage, Alaska and Lois Ensley of Sylva; one granddaughter, Nikki Burke of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Evi Burke, also of Santa Rosa, Calif. and three step grandchildren, Jennifer Davenport, Jeremy Davenport and Justin Crumpler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Rev. Charles Dean of East Sylva Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the families home in Waynesville
