US Congressman. He immigrated to the U.S. with his parents at age three, was educated and became a successful law attorney. During World War II, he served in Europe as an Infantry Captain, and was awarded a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster. After the war, he returned to law practice and was elected to the town board of North Hempstead, New York in 1948. In 1953, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-third Congress, and to the five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1965. Thereafter, he served as a justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1969 until retiring from the bench in 1981. After moving to Texas, he was counsel to a firm there and taught law at the University of Texas at Austin for several more years.
