Orphie Neathery III
September 9, 1941 - November 4, 2014

Orphie Neathery III (affectionately known to all as Pappy), 73, passed away peacefully at home, after a brief battle with pneumonia, on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. He was born September 9, 1941 in Granite, Oklahoma to Orphie Neathery, Jr. and John Bunny Winchester. Orphie married his high school sweetheart, Aneda Darleen ("Meme") Olive on August 4, 1961 in Mangum, Oklahoma. They began their life together as students at Texas A&M University where Orphie studied Petroleum Engineering and Meme worked in the University Clerk's Office. Soon afterwards Jeffrey Stephen arrived and then daughter Constance Annette was born.

After earning his Master's degree in Geological Engineering, Orphie began a career with Mobil Oil, which moved his family often. In 1978, after the passing of his father, Orphie moved his family to San Antonio. He took over his father's business as an independent oil and gas producer and enjoyed many years of success.

Orphie earned his pilot's license as a young man and was the proud owner of a Beechcraft A36 Bonanza. On weekends he enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson Road King through the Hill Country. He won the Corpus Christi Labor Day Regatta when inclement weather caused the more experienced participants to quit the race. He also has the dubious distinction of being sued by the San Antonio Conservation Society for the clever computer game he created about NIOSA. Other than his family, his love in life was trains. He was an active member of SAMRA and spent many happy hours building landscapes and towns for the club. He was also the inaugural recipient of the National Olive Family Association Long Suffering Award for the countless reunions and genealogy trips he took with Meme. He was a longtime member of Oak Hills Country Club and the San Antonio Petroleum Club.
But most of all, Pappy was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was wise, gracious and generous to all. A great light has truly left us.

Less than a year ago, Orphie was preceded in death by Meme, the love of his life of 52 years. He is survived by his son Jeff and his wife Elaine; daughter Connie and her husband Vince Hazen; grandchildren Stephen and Brian Neathery, Neils (and wife Kelly), Sam, Hattie and Jack Hazen.

Services will be held at noon on Monday, November 10, 2014 at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio, TX. Viewing begins at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the San Antonio Model Railroad Association (SAMRA) 7122 Narrow Pass St, San Antonio, TX 78227. Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com .
