Joy Roberts Rites Monday
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Grace Methodist Church for E. Joy Roberts who died Friday morning while enroute from Des Moines to Spencer. His death followed a heart attack.
The Rev, F.W. Ortmeyer was the officiating minister. Two selection "Abide With Me" and "Nearer, My God, To Thee" were sung by the members of the Nubbins quartet, Robert, Harold and Paul Krile and Kenneth Hoyne. Myra Rowley accompanied
Masonic rites were observed with a uniformed escort from the Knights Templar
Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery under the direction of the Cobb Warner Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Noll Driscoll, A.E. Bjornstad, Harry Lawrence, Robert MacDowell, Robert Miller and N.C. Rindsig

E. Joy Roberts, son of Thomas Lynn and Mary Roberts, was born July 19, 1888 in Leadville, Colorado. At the time of his death he was 59 years and three months of age.
He came to Spencer with his parents when he was a child. He attended both high school and college in western Tennessee and returning to this city to Lena Moorehouse
After pursing a number of trades for several years Mr. Roberts established and insurance business in Spencer which he continued until his death and in which he has been associated for the past few years with his son. Mr. Roberts was well known in the community and state because of his work with the Clay County Fair as well as the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. He was actively associated with the State Fair for 20 years and helped develop the Clay County Fair for which he publicity work for 25 years. Because of his love for children, his interest in fellowman and his ability in woodcraft, Mr. Roberts began to play the role of Santa Claus to the children of Clay County and Spencer 35 years ago, a pleasing task which was more than a passing hobby it a year around work and was of pre Christmas days. He made constantly busy in repairing toys for the next holiday season. Mr. Roberts held high positions in the various Masonic bodies. He served as the head of the Temple Council, was also head of the Azotus Commandery and at the time of his death was head of the Royal Arch Masons
He was also a member of the Shrine, the Elks and the Spencer Chamber of Commerce
He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Roscoe Fertick, and a son, Charles (Buddy) Roberts, both of Spencer. Grandchildren are Dean James, Roscoe Fertick, Jr. and Cheryl Anderson.
