Mrs. Shirley Certain Allison, of the Rome community, died under the care of Kindred Hospice of Cookeville at the age of 76 at her Lebanon Highway home at 6:55pm Thursday evening, May 31, 2018, with her friends, extended church family, and her Home Instead caregivers at her bedside.

Her pastor, Eld. Junior Dickerson, and North Carthage Baptist Church preacher, Eld. Anthony Dixon, officiated at the 3pm Sunday afternoon, June 3rd, funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed beside her husband in the Certain family lot in the Garden of Gethsemane at Smith County Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Allison requested mention be made that when Eld. Dixon was a small boy attending Plunketts Creek she was his Sunday school teacher. Also, playing the piano at the funeral services was Angela Brooks Hackett, who was Mrs. Allison's first piano student when she taught piano lessons.

Born Shirley Jean Certain in the Watervale community, she was the only child of well-known home builder, Robert L. Certain, who died at the age of 66 on January 2, 1984, and Sadie Mai Litchford Certain, who died at the age of 76 on August 28, 1997.

At the Hartsville Missionary Baptist Church on December 7, 1985, she was united in marriage to Plunketts Creek community native Dewey Lee Allison, who preceded her in death on February 20, 2018, at the age of 80, after suffering from a long battle with dementia. The wedding ceremony was preformed by the late Eld. Walter Deweese.

Immediately after graduation she was employed by then Smith County Judge Clint Beasley as a secretary, later as secretary for Chancellor Judge Edward Turner before joining Senator Albert Gore Sr.'s staff.

During Senator Gore Sr.'s term in Washington, Mrs. Allison was the managing representative and personal secretary of Senator Gore's Carthage office, located in the Cordell Hull Federal Building on Main Street which houses the Carthage Post Office.

In the late 70's and early 80's she owned and operated the Carthage Flower Shop, which was located in the Main Street building where Shoulder's TV is now located.

She was the town clerk of the Town of Carthage while B.M. Lowe Jr. was town mayor.

In 1998, she was appointed radiology coordinator at the then Smith County Memorial Hospital (now River Regional Medical Center) by then administrator Dr. Jerry Futrell. She was also the director of Volunteer services.

She was a member of the 1959 graduating class of Smith County High School where she was active in the chorus and music programs, her junior and senior years was a football queen attendant, a member of the Owl staff, and was the Girls State representative her senior year.

Her majors were Office Commercial, which she studied under Mrs. Ruby Earps Davis and Foreign Languages under Mr. Jack Read. It was said of her in the '59 yearbook, "does well, acts nobly; angels could do no more."

In the earlier years, Mrs. Allison was active in the Carthage 190 Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was saved at an early age and baptized into the full fellowship of the Plunketts Creek Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death.

She was especially appreciative of all her church family especially Larry Taylor Wilkerson and Becky Taylor Cookston, who had cared for her needs during her final illness and the death of her beloved husband, Dewey.

Her only survivors are cousins and her extended church family.

Mrs. Allison, in planning her final services, had requested memorial be made to the Plunketts Creek Missionary Baptist Building Fund.
