LOMBARD, Edward Nutting, 97, of Charlottesville, Va., died on Friday, May 25, 2018. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 6, 1920, the son of Edward B. Lombard and Ruth Nutting Lombard. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 68 years, Annie Hall Lombard; his sister, Bernice Hatzenbuhler; and his brother, James Lombard. Known to many as "Lum," Edward is survived by his daughters, Harriett L. Orrock (Bryant Orrock), Jan L. Hundley (Billy Hundley) and Mary L. Lombard; grandchildren, Deborah Breihan, Jordan Hague and Christine Cooper; great-grandchildren, Emily, Mackenzie and Mason Breihan and Benjamin and Zachary Cooper. After service in the Civilian Conservation Corps, Edward joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He proudly served with the First Marine Division in Cuba in 1941 and in the Asian-Pacific Theater as a tank driver from 1942 to 1944. He participated in action against the Japanese enemy forces in New Guinea, Cape Gloucester, and the Battle of Guadalcanal. He was honorably discharged in 1946. During his career with Southern States Cooperative, he befriended many of his customers, who remained life-long friends. The family expresses their gratitude to the care and compassion of the Veterans Administration and the Hospice of the Piedmont during his final days. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2018, at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Va. 22911, hopva.org, or the Louisa Volunteer Fire Department, 300 E.
