Donald Ray Sikes, 83, of Lubbock and formerly of Slaton, Texas passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 in Lubbock, Texas.

Donald was born Monday, September 24, 1934 in Wayside, Texas to Bill and Bower Sikes of Slaton. He graduated from Slaton High School and attended Texas Tech University. Donald owned and operated Sikes Machine Shop with his brothers in Slaton, TX. He married Belva Jean Howard in December of 1992.

Donald was known for his love of God, his family and his community. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Slaton where he began leading Wednesday night singing at age 11. He became the Sunday morning song leader while he was in high school and continued for over 60 years. He also taught singing groups and Bible classes and served as a deacon. He sang at community gatherings, weddings and funerals, sometimes with one or more of his daughters. His love of church and singing resonated through multiple generations.

Donald served as mayor of Slaton from 1981 to 1987. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was named Man of the Year in 1982 and Citizen of the Month in 1987. He served as president of the Rotary Club and was named Honorary District Attorney of Lubbock by John T. Montford in 1982. He was an Honorary Colonel of the Slaton JROTC at Slaton High School from 1981-1987 and received a Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service from the Department of the Army.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Belva Jean Sikes of Lubbock, 3 daughters, Donneva Crowell and husband Paul Qualls of Gettysburg, PA, Debbie and husband Brad Smith of Lubbock, TX and Diana and husband Mark McMillan of Abilene, TX, Belva's sons whom he loved dearly, Brian and wife Monica Maloney and Mark Dyas of Lubbock, TX and a brother, Jimmy and wife Ronda Sikes of Slaton, TX; 11 grandchildren, Lucas Mitchell, Soren Crowell, Nikki Griggs and husband Jason, Brett Smith and wife Monica and Kristen and Bryan McMillan, Brynlee, Blake, Jaxon and Zachary Dyas and Mandi Maloney; Donald was blessed with 4 great grandchildren, Elliot and Eva Mitchell and Peyton and Paxton Griggs.

A funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Church of Christ located at 340 West Division Street, Slaton, Texas 79364 with Curtis Baker officiating. Interment will be in Englewood Cemetery, Slaton, TX.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Friday, April 27, 2018, at Englunds, 1400 Woodrow Road, Slaton, Texas.
