Roger Nowlin Gentry, 58, of Ennis, died Friday, May 25, 2018, at his home after a sudden illness. Burial will be at Myrtle Cemetery.

Roger was born in Ellis County, Texas, to Charles E. Gentry Sr. and Mary Helen Nowlin Gentry.

Roger served as Advertising Manager and then Circulation Manager for The Ennis Daily News. After he left the Ennis Daily News, he worked for Payne Metal Works of Ennis and concurrently operated his own business, Gentry Services. He began working for N-Line Traffic Maintenance, then AWP, Area Wide Protective, where he was Facility Manager. Roger continued working there until the time of his death.

Roger enjoyed giving his time to the children of the community through Ennis Little League. Roger was a sports enthusiast and attended thousands of high school football, basketball and baseball games throughout his lifetime. He loved sports so much he worked many years as a basketball referee, volleyball referee, and baseball umpire from Little League through college level.

Roger loved playing dominoes and cards, particularly spades and even had his father’s knack of knowing which cards and dominoes had been played, often to the dismay of their stumped opponents.

Roger established some of his own traditions with his children, playing trivia games, fishing, barbecuing and smoking meats, and hunting at their deer lease every fall.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Gentry, in January 2012.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Smith Gentry, of Ennis; daughter, Meredith Gentry Andersen and her husband, Derek, of Fort Worth; sons: Christopher Bouchillon and his wife, Milissa, of Canfield, Ohio, Jonathon Gentry and his wife, Danielle, of Corsicana, and Roger Nowlin Gentry II and his wife, Crystal, of Ennis; grandchildren: Delaney and Dempsey Andersen, Alexandra, Abigail and Elijah Calvin Bouchillon, Brayden and Olivia Gentry, and Evan and Cadence Crowley; his mother, Mary H. Gentry; brother, Charlie Gentry; of Dallas; sisters, Kathleen Gentry Fox and her husband, Dudley Fox, of Ennis, and Peggy Gentry Phillips, of Carrollton; and several nieces and nephews. Q5
