FRANKLIN D. KNIGHT "Frank" Passed away after an acute illness on May 26, 2018. Frank was born and raised in Canton, Ohio into a large extended family. His years at Canton Lincoln High School were spent playing football on a field shared with the Football Hall of Fame. After graduating high school, Frank attended Miami University in Ohio and Kent State before being appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1960 by a Republican congressman, despite his Democrat-sounding name. He was proud that his mother never missed an opportunity to attend the mothers of West Point alumni local luncheons. Frank embodied throughout his life the sense of "Duty, Honor, Country". After graduation in 1964, Frank served in the U.S. Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1969. He settled in the Washington, DC area; eventually retiring from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. His academic achievements included attending the University of Chicago Booth School of Business during his Air Force service, but he was more likely to let others know about his later attendance at Harvard Law School (for a two-week professional development course). Frank was an avid reader and owner of an abundance of books. He spent many weekends throughout adulthood in Dewey Beach and Rehoboth, DE, although he was averse to actually stepping foot on the beach. He also participated in the annual Ernest Hemingway look-alike contest for many years in Key West, FL. During retirement he traveled on cruises exploring the Mediterranean, South America, Asia, and the Pacific. He enjoyed singing karaoke and spending time with friends and family. He will be remembered for his warm sense of humor, kindness, intellect, and humility. Frank is predeceased by his parents, Erskine and Loutis Knight, brother Llewellyn "Bubba" Knight and sister Mary Ann "Sissy" Penland. He will be reunited with his loving and doting family. He is survived by two daughters, Lauren and Kelly (David Stone) who will miss him dearly. He will also be missed by his former wife, Cheryl Simmons, his sisters-in-law Cindy Prentiss and Karen Ragazzo, along with their families, and brother-in-law Ted. Frank acquired a great many friends over his lifetime, as he was well-liked by all he met. Service will take place Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road Fairfax, VA 22032. Service at 1 p.m. followed by interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank's memory to the Lymphoma Research Foundation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank's memory to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.
