WINSTON-SALEM Dec. 6, 1948 - May 26, 2018 Mr. Larry "James" Craven, 69, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018. He was born on December 6, 1948, in Greensboro to the late William "Bill" Craven and Patsy Sarvis Craven. James graduated from Hickory High School in 1967 and Appalachian State University in 1971. He married Evelyn Farmer of Independence, VA on October 25, 1979, and they enjoyed 38 years of marriage together until her death on May 18, 2018. James spent his career in information technology, working as a software developer and consultant with a specialty in manufacturing control systems. James loved music and was an avid amateur guitar player and singer, playing with friends on a weekly basis. He loved and played music of the Beatles, the Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Merle Haggard, and many others. Among his other interests were gardening, cooking, and racing radio-controlled model cars. James enjoyed sports, including Wake Forest football and basketball, the Atlanta Braves, and NASCAR. Most of all, James loved being in the company of his many friends. Evelyn and James built their dream home, which they called the Treehouse, and their great joy was entertaining friends and family there. In addition to his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by his brother, Allen Craven. He is survived by his brother, Randy Craven (Mimi) of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Barbara Snyder (Larry) of Winston-Salem; and nephew, Doug Snyder of Wilmington. Also surviving are special friends, Tina and Chad Henderson of Winston-Salem, Lawrence Cline of Lexington, and Atiq Samad of Geneva, Switzerland. A service to celebrate James and Evelyn's lives will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Kent Kern officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. A private burial will be held later. The family of Mr. Craven would like to send a special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Forsyth Medical Center for the care they provided to James. His family and friends will miss him deeply but are thankful James and Evelyn are together again in eternity. James was a U.S. Army veteran and volunteer for the veterans service organization, Amvets, serving as local post commander and as an officer at the state level.
