William is a son of William James and Sarah Jenkins - Welsh immigrants who came to Utah just prior to his birth. The family settled first in Ogden and then in Paradise where William grew to manhood.

William married Martha Griffiths (herself a Welsh immigrant) on January 9, 1885 in Logan, Utah. They became parents to William Griffith James in 1894. He only lived a few months and then Martha died in 1899.

William was a farmer. He was living alone on the 1910 Census. He died of diabetic complications.
