Frank Sylvester Fields, Jr., 90, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on May 19, 2018.
Frank Sylvester Fields, Jr. was born to Agnes Noreen and Frank S. Fields, Sr. on March 26, 1928. Frank was a native of Leavenworth, Kansas. He was the oldest of 8 brothers; and had 1 older sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Charles F. Fields, Sr., Clyde U. Fields, George C. Fields, and sister, Doris McDaniel, and one sister-in-law, Theresa Fields.
Frank was affectionately nicknamed “June”, which was short for Jr. Later, it changed to “Hank”, to rhyme to Frank. Frank was educated in the Leavenworth Kansas School District. He was a faithful member of the Independent Baptist church, where his parents encouraged him to diligently seek the Lord, study His Word, and earnestly serve the Lord. This life lesson paralleled with the biblical proverb, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. Proverbs 22:6
After receiving his formal education, Frank joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 4 years. Frank shared many interesting stories about his Navy adventures. One adventure in 1946 changed his life irrevocably. While he was aboard ship, in the Pacific Ocean, at Bikini Atoll, Isle, he observed the first testing of the Atomic Bomb. He said the roar from this explosion filled the sky with clouds of billowing darkness, that it was almost beyond his comprehension.
In 1951, Frank married the Love of His Life, Faye T. McDaniel. They relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, and in that same year, they joined the St. Stephen Baptist Church, under the Pastoral care of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Williams, Sr. Frank and Faye could see God’s hand directing their footsteps. Frank accepted employment with the Bendix Corporation from which several names evolved: The Atomic Energy Commission, Allied Signal, and presently, Honeywell. Frank retired after providing 31 ½ years of exceptional service as their First African American Operating Engineer.
Frank was blessed with a wife and supportive family; that created a home environment that was comfortable, relaxing, fun, and spirit filled. Truly, Frank and Faye’s fifty-three years of marriage were Blessed by the Hand of God.
In 1970, Frank accepted the Lord’s call to serve as an ordained Deacon at St. Stephen Baptist Church. Over the many years, Deacon Fields wore many hats within the church. His wisdom and willing spirit to encourage others to seek the Lord is a testament to his great stewardship, while traveling on his Christian journey.
Undeniably, Deacon Fields cherished the sweet memory of his Beloved Wife, “Chipper”, and his 2 children, Falice N. Grigsby and Frank S. Fields III. In addition to their three children, additional branches of love have been added to this family tree. Their eldest and loving daughter Barbara Watson Word and two wonderful sons-in-law Kenneth R. Grigsby and Louis B. Stevens. Deacon Fields was the proud grandfather to Kyle E. Grigsby, Julian A. Grigsby, Daria L. Stevens, April Watson, and Chris Watson. He was the proud great grandfather to Jazmyn and Sydney Grigsby, and Jordyn Hartzog. Let’s not forget, he’s the proud “Uncle Hank” to countless nieces and nephews.
Frank’s interests and hobbies included his love of gardening, listening to Gospel Music, reading The Bible, his ability to make others laugh with his uncanny wit and sense of humor, spending time with his family; especially frequent phone conversations with his brothers.
He leaves to cherish and treasure his precious memory, his youngest daughter, Francine Stevens (Louis), who is eternally Blessed in having had a loving, precious relationship in which she was truly a Daddy’s little girl. Brothers: Floyd Fields (Jane) Leavenworth, KS., Ralph Fields (Pat) Honolulu, HI., Leroy Fields (Norma) Leavenworth, KS., Donald Fields New Jersey, NJ., Special Brother Victor Ruiz New Jersey, NJ., sisters-in-law: Andrea Fields Lansing, KS., Christine Fields Crownsville, MD., Louise McDaniel Salina, KS., and beloved relatives, a host of friends, and church family.
