From Gannett Suburban Newspapers, March 17, 1994:

"Elsa Victoria Harvey, the wife of comic maven Alfred Harvey and a pioneer in the field of character licensing, died at Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital Tuesday. The longtime Larchmont resident was 62.

Mrs. Harvey's husband was founder and president of Harvey World Famous Comics Inc. and creator of the characters Richie Rich, Little Dot and Hot Stuff.

Mrs. Harvey worked for the company and won major accounts for product tie-ins to the characters, including Colgate-Palmolive, Nabisco, Taystee Freeze, Schwinn bicycles and Mattel.

In 1957, she orchestrated a multimillion dollar deal in which she purchased, for the Harvey companies, the rights to Paramount Pictures' cartoon libary and characters. She leased the cartoons -- including Casper, Baby Huey, Little Audrey, and Herman and Katnip -- to the ABC television network.

She took great pride that these characters stressed friendship, moral values and wholesome stories to their young audiences, said her son, Alan Harvey. Mrs. Harvey refused to handle the horror comic books. In 1989, most of the Harvey properties were sold to California investors.

Mrs. Harvey was born April 7, 1931, to Carl and Ruth Lorne. She grew up in New York City and attended Julia Richmond High School and the City College of New York, where she earned a Phi Beta Kappa key.

While working her way through college as a waitress at Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop in Manhattan, she met her future husband and took a job with his company. At 23, she was advertising director of many of the comic books, including Casper, the Friendly Ghost; Dick Tracy; Blondie and Dagwood; Sad Sack; and Joe Palooka.

On July 28, 1958, she married Alfred Harvey at Temple Emanuel in New York City. They moved from Riverdale to Larchmont in 1968. Her favorite charity, each winter, has been giving Christmas meals to needy families in New York City.

Mrs. Harvey enjoyed swimming and downhill skiing, among other sports, her family said. She learned French and Spanish and enjoyed traveling to Europe, family members said.

In recent years, she devoted herself to caring for her husband, who has been in a coma since 1989. She also was active in forming a new comic book company, Lorne-Harvey Publications, which specializes in the reissuance of her husband's first comic book character, the Black Cat."
