Earl Fain III DALLAS, TX - Memorial services for Earl Fain III are planned for 1 PM Tuesday May 29 at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 8011 Douglas, Dallas, TX 75225. Mr. Fain died Monday April 30.
Born August 7, 1932 to Virginia Bower Fain and Earl Fain, Jr in Dallas, Texas, he attended the Highland Park schools, Texas Country Day School and later Deerfield Academy. While at Dartmouth College, he joined Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, graduating with a bachelor's degree in geology. He continued his studies at the University of Texas but was drafted into the United States Army. Stationed in Germany, Earl served as a ski patrolman, near Berchtesgaden. Returning from Europe, he resumed his geology studies at SMU. He met and married Catherine Kelly Erwin of Dallas in 1959. Earl entered his financial securities career as a stockbroker in Dallas but soon moved to Wall Street, training as an oil industry analyst. He also shared a cattle and timber business with his father and brother at the Bluff Plantation near Yemassee, South Carolina. The Fains returned to Dallas in 1966 to raise their two children. The Fains retired to New Mexico with their beloved dogs in 1992. Together they savored the natural beauty and life-style Santa Fe offered them. Earl continued to pursue his passions for skiing, fly-fishing, hunting and later soaring.
Earl enjoyed traveling to visit family, school and skiing friends. He took a special adventure, late in life, to assist The Rock Outreach ministry in Uganda. There he helped students develop business skills at Uganda Christian University. A committed philanthropist, Earl gave both time and resources to Christian, educational, recreational and animal welfare charities.
He was a loyal alumnus, a gliding museum docent, a children's ski instructor and volunteer with several dog organizations. In Dallas he was a member of Brook Hollow Golf Club, the Petroleum Club and Idlewild. In New Mexico, he was a member of the Albuquerque Soaring Club. In Charleston he was a member of Ft Sumter Camp No. 1269, SCV. Preceded in death by his wife Kelly Erwin Fain.
Survived by son Earl Fain IV (Courtenay) and grandson Taliaferro Rice Fain of Charleston, SC; daughter Virginia Elizabeth Fain of Ft Worth; and brother James Bower Fain of Dallas, and many other family and friends.
