American Astronaut. He, along with fellow astronaut Story Musgrave, performed the first shuttle-era spacewalk during the space shuttle Challenger mission in April of 1983. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York in 1955 and received a master's degree in nuclear engineering from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson in Ohio in 1962. He also served for four years as a flight instructor and military training officer with the Air Training Command, three years as a nuclear systems analyst with the Air Force Systems Command and one year as a fighter pilot with Tactical Air Command. He was later chosen one of the third group of astronauts assigned to the USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) program, but the program was later cancelled. In 1969, he joined NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Adminstration) as an astronaut and retired from the United States Air Force. In 1983, he, along with fellow astronauts Paul J. Weitz, Col. Karol J. Bobko, and Story Musgrave, went up into space aboard the space shuttle Challenger. During this mission, he, along with Musgrave, performed the first shuttle-era spacewalk to test new suits and other equipment used for construction and repairs outside the shuttle. He retired from the astronaut corps in 1984 and later served as a consultant in the area of manned spacecraft operations.
