The captain followed the sea for about forty years. In 1847 the schooner Jacob M. Haskell was built for him, and in her he made the record crossing of his 15 foreign voyages—Boston to London in seventeen days. He served his country in the navy as sailing master for four years in the Civil war. He was taken a prisoner of war and kept in a southern prison for five months.
