Regina R. Layton, 76, Emmaus, formerly of Honesdale, died unexpectedly Thursday at the Lehigh Valley Medical Center emergency room. Her husband, Henry K. Layton, died on July 5, 1998.
Born Oct. 24, 1924 in Honesdale, daughter of the late Victor C. and Mary T. Merkle Smith, she attended the Bethel School, and then graduated from Honesdale High School. The couple lived in Newport News, Va., where she was a clerk at the Jamestown Gift Shop. Upon moving to Allentown, she was employed by the Quaker Shoe Co., Allentown, and later as a clerk at the Holiday Gulf Station, retiring in 1989. The couple then moved back to Honesdale, where she lived for eight years. Following her husband's death, she moved to her son's home in Emmaus. She was a member of St. Ann's Church, Emmaus, and a former member of St. John's Parish, Honesdale. She was a member of the Boot and Shoe Workers union and a former member of the Jednota and Bocce clubs of Allentown.
Surviving are a son, John, with whom she resided; two brothers, Robert and Peter Smith; three sisters, Rose Olver, Martha Bartron, and Genevieve Odom; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Victoria Fichter, Katherine Knehr, Mary Mullen and Teresa Kittner; and three brothers, Victor Jr., Karl and Alex Smith.
The funeral will be from the Hessling Funeral Home, Honesdale, with Mass in St. Mary Magdalen's Church, Honesdale. Interment, East Dyberry Cemetery, Dyberry Township.
