SHREVEPORT, LA - Robert Carl Ehrhardt, III of Shreveport, Louisiana, died Monday, April 16, 2007, after a brief illness. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, April 20, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Reverends Dr. Donald A. Webb, Beth Love Tu'uta and Dave Fortuna.
Robert was born on July 28, 1945 in Tampa, Florida, and was raised in Shreveport by his grandmother and grandfather, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carl Ehrhardt, Sr., who preceded him in death. Robert's musical training started in 1952, at the age of seven. He first studied piano, and later, organ and choral conducting with Norman Z. Fisher, who became Robert's lifelong friend and mentor.
Robert graduated from Byrd High School and attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studied organ, piano, and opera coaching. He returned to Shreveport and attended Centenary College, studying piano with Nina Wideman, organ with William Teague, and conducting with John Shenaut. While attending Centenary, Robert served as pianist, organist, chorusmaster, and assistant conductor of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, musical director, vocal coach and chorusmaster with the Centenary Opera Theatre, Marjorie Lyons Playhouse, and the Shreveport Opera. He toured nationally on several occasions, beginning while he was still in high school.
Robert was organist and choirmaster of Shreveport's St. Paul's Episcopal Church from 1967 until 1978. In 1979, Robert took a position as organist at First United Methodist Church, remaining there until 1986. During these same years, Robert was the Director of Music at B'nai Zion Temple. He served there until 1980. In 1991, Robert relocated to The Netherlands where he coached and conducted productions of "Les Misérables", Phantom of the Opera", "Sweeney Todd", "Evita", "Cats", and "Cyrano-the Musical". He was also on the staff of the International Opera Center of the Netherlands and coached many singers for appearances with the Netherlands Opera, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, and the BBC.
A practicing church musician since the age of twelve, Robert returned to his roots in 1996, when he came home to Shreveport and again took the position of Organist and Associate Music Director for Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, a position he held from 1986 through 1990. Robert remained a beloved employee and member of the Noel family until his untimely death this week. Throughout his life, Robert was an accomplished composer of organ, choral, and instrumental works, and could play anything at anytime, with or without written music! He was known, not only for his incredible musical gifts, but also for his quick dry wit, and loyalty to those whom he loved.
Besides Robert's grandparents, Robert, Sr. and Kathleen, he is also preceded in death by his father, Robert Carl Ehrhardt, Jr. He is survived by his brother, Charles Ehrhardt and wife, Nelda "Dot" of Shreveport, LA; three nieces, Suzanne Ehrhardt, Amanda Redding and husband, Ken and Kimberly McGlothin and husband, Michael; two nephews, J.R. Robbins and wife, Beckey and Richard Ehrhardt; and the staff and membership of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, who indeed were also Robert's family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Noel Memorial United Methodist Church.
