DEATH CLAIMS MARION COUPLE NEAR TOGETHER
Bereaved and shocked by the sudden death of her husband, Harry O. Dicks, 62, at 4:30 a.m. today, Mrs. Ella Carson Dicks, 60, went into the basement of their home at 139 Jefferson Street, and drank carbolic acid, which caused her death at the city hospital at 7 a.m.
Mr. Dicks, at one time manager of the Stoltz garage and later engaged in the insurance business here, died suddenly of angina pectoris before the family physician reached the home. He had not felt well yesterday, and had gone to the doctor, who had been treating him for some time, family members said. On the physician's advice he went home and to bed. It is believed he wakened his wife shortly after four before lapsing into unconsciousness.
Ill herself for a period of years, Mrs. Dicks raised the window and called for help, bringing neighbor women to the home in a matter of minutes. A neighbor called the family physician, but Mr. Dick's died before the arrival of the doctor.
Mrs. Dicks left the room when told that her husband was dead and when she returned in an agitated state, the doctor said today, he thought that he had detected the odor of poison as she passed him.
The C.E. Curtis Co. rushed Mrs. Dicks to the hospital by ambulance where antidotes and treatments were immediately administered, but to no avail.
Coroner F.M. Axthelm, who made an investigation of Mrs. Dicks death, gave a verdict of "death from carbolic acid, swallowed with suicidal intent. both bodies are at The C.E.Curtis Funeral HOme on East center Street. Where a double funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will be made in Marion Cemetery.
Mrs. Dicks, a resident of Marion for more than 50 years, was a native of Rushsylvania, born there May 8, 1876 to Thomas A and Leah Musselman Carson. She was a second cousin of Roy Howard of New York City, chairman of the board of directors and editorial director of the Scripps- Howard Newspapers. Mr. Howard's father, William Howard of Rushsylvania was a first cousin of Mrs. Dicks father.
Both Mr. & Mrs. Dicks were members of the Presbyterian Church and Mr. Dicks was a member of Marion Lodge No 32, Order of the Elks.
Mr. Dicks was born in Richwood may 6, 1874, son of Francis M Dicks, native of Sulphur Springs and Frances A Smith Dicks, a native of Richwood.
Mr. & Mrs. Dicks were married in Marion more than forty years ago.
