He married Dorothy Wingfield at St. Martins Church in Stamford on Sept. 30, 1586. Dorothy Wingfield was the daughter of Robert Wingfield and his wife Elizabeth Cecil of Upton, Northamptonshire. Through her father's lineage Dorothy was a direct descendant of King Edward I of England. Her mother Elizabeth Cecil was the sister of the well know Lord Burghley, who served in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Adam Claypoole and Dorothy Wingfield had twelve children of which their 4th son Sir John Claypoole, born March 13, 1595, remains the most well known.
