Marvin Edgar Wallace, age 91, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, passed away Friday, May 25, 2018 at Ardmore, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 30, 2018, 1:00 PM at the Church of Christ on Merrick Drive in Ardmore, Oklahoma, officiated by Bob Smee. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will Tuesday evening from 6-7 PM at Craddock Funeral Home.
Edgar was born to Daly Frank and Beaulah Bell (Black) Wallace at Orr, Oklahoma, on February 24, 1927. He was born, grew up, and attended all twelve years of school there. He was the third oldest of 11 children.
After graduation from high school in 1945, Edgar joined the army. Following basic training he was shipped to the Pacific at the end of WWII and entered Japan with the Army of Occupation Forces, stationed at Sasebo, Japan. While there, he was the winner of the 34th Regimental boxing tournament.
After receiving an honorable discharge, Edgar returned home and enrolled at Murray College and was a member of the college boxing team there. While there, he met Reba Marie Taylor and they were married on July 24, 1948, at Mannsville, Oklahoma. July 24 would have been their 70th wedding anniversary. They had four children: Gwynn, Jeffrey, Scott and Bruce.
After Murray College, Edgar transferred to Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and History & Government. He later attended the University of Oklahoma where he received a Master’s Degree in City School Administration.
Following graduation from Southeastern, Edgar was employed by the Thackerville School System as high school coach for boys & girls. In 1953, he moved to Garvin County and was employed by the Paoli School District as high school principal and boys and girls coach. In 1956, Edgar left the coaching field and joined the Ardmore City Schools as a teacher at Will Rogers Elementary School. He served first as a classroom teacher and then principal, for a combined total of 29 years.
During his educational career, Edgar was elected President of the Ardmore Education Association, Carter County Education Association and Southeastern District Education. He also served two terms as President of the Carter County Retired Educator’s Association. He was recognized as a “Very Important Member” by the Oklahoma Retired Educator’s Association and was also named an honorary highway patrol trooper by Clent Dedic, OHP Commissioner.
In 1965 Edgar and Sonny Herriott organized the YMCA Boxing Club and acted as volunteer coached for the next 12 years.
Edgar loved to fish, watch sports and travel, having visited all but three of the 50 states and also 7 foreign countries.
Edgar and Marie were founding members of the Maxwell Avenue Church of Christ where he served as Bible class teacher, song leader, deacon, and 30 years as an elder. In 2000 they moved to Abilene, Texas to be near their daughter. While living in Abilene they were members of the Hillcrest Church of Christ. In 2016 they returned to Ardmore.
Edgar is survived by his wife Marie; one daughter: Gwynn Haseltine and husband Jeff, of Abilene, Texas; two sons: Scott Wallace and wife, Marie, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and Bruce Wallace of Nashville, Tennessee; four sisters: Alene Lyons and Peggy Parker of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Judy Delaney of Sugden, Oklahoma, and Glenda Hood of Hastings, Oklahoma; two brothers: Jerry Wallace and wife, Virginia, of Waurika, Oklahoma, and Geary Wallace of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Beard and husband Blake, Kelly Quinn, Jessica Khachiyants & husband Armen, Melanie Haseltine, Claire Haseltine, Shawn Wallace, Rachel Wallace; two great grandchildren: Charles Beard and Gracie Beard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edgar was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jeffrey Wallace; one sister, Irene Hartman; and 3 brothers: John Wallace, Dewey Wallace & Gene Wallace.
