Elder Carlton Mathes son of the late Emaline Foster Mathes and Jacob Mathes was born in Oates, Missouri, on August 20, 1924. He departed this life at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 26, 2018, at the age of 93.
On January 9, 1948, in Oates, Missouri, Carlton was united in marriage to Doris Barton and to this union one son was born. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2008. Carlton was a member of the Locust Grove United Baptist Church. He was a retired school teacher, a minister for many years and a lifetime member of the Hopewell Masonic Lodge #239 in Lesterville. Carlton Pastored many churches throughout Reynolds County and was best known as “The Smiling Preacher of the Ozarks”. He was an avid coon hunter, and he loved visiting with family and friends and preaching the word of God.
Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son, Leo Dwayne Mathes, one brother Louie Mathes, two sisters, Ruby Faulkner and Maxine Bailey.
Carlton is survived by one brother, Edgar Gene Mathes of St. Clair, Missouri, one sister, Arvessia Goforth of Salem, Missouri, sisters-in-law, Loretta (Gene) Reese of Lesterville, Missouri, and Imogene Johnson of Lesterville, Missouri, and many other nieces, nephews and other relatives that will mourn his passing.
Visitation: Friday, June 1st 5 to 8 PM at McSpadden Funeral Home, Lesterville, MO
A second visitation will be Saturday, June 2nd 11 AM with Funeral following at 1 PM
