In his young years he loved acting, playing pranks on friends, singing background music with Emma Kelly’s nightclub act in Savannah, playing piano, and driving his Midget MG convertible.
Joe taught high school English and French in the Effingham County Georgia School System. He was named “Star Teacher” during that time. He moved to Dalton in 1977 and taught gifted students and Advanced Placement (AP) English at Dalton High School in Dalton, Georgia until his retirement in 1991. He was well-respected by his students and loved encouraging young people to develop to their full potential.
After retiring he pursued his love of collecting and selling antiques and collectibles. He sold through auctions, various antique malls, and at numerous antique shows throughout the eastern and southern United States. He traveled widely in pursuit of the unusual, including trips to Greece, France, Italy, and Egypt, but he especially loved his frequent travels to England.
Joe was active in numerous organizations. He collected Blue Willow and was a member of the International Willow Society. His greatest interest was collecting and selling Torquay Pottery and Devon Ware. In 1990, he was one of the founding members of the North American Torquay Society and he was associated with the Torquay Pottery Collector’s Society in England.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom had a special relationship with Uncle Joe. His niece, Debbie Yancey, will especially miss her travels with her Uncle Joe and her Aunt Dale. Joe is also survived by his dear friend and business partner, Robert Collier, and the Collier children, all of whom loved Joe dearly. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Floyd A.
