Born Catherine Widrick on January 19, 1937 at the family home on the West Road near Martinsburg, a daughter of the late John S. and Elizabeth “Libbie” Roggie Widrick. Catherine attended country school and moved with her parents to Adams in 1947. She graduated in 1953, from Adams High School. After attending Eastern Mennonite College at Harrisonburg, VA, Catherine worked in the Pathology Lab at Mercy Hospital in Watertown from 1960-1966, then moved to Syracuse and was employed at Upstate Medical Center for 26 years in the Pathology Department. She retired in 1991.
She was married in April of 1967, to Robert J. Barnes, son of the late Albert and Stella Raymond Barnes of Chateaugay. The couple lived in the Jordan-Elbridge area, and were members of the Elbridge Community Church. Mr. Barnes was an active member of the Jordan Masonic Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes both became members of the Eastern Star Order of Weedsport. Robert died in May of 1991.
Catherine returned to Lowville to live in 1993. She enjoyed volunteering in the office of the Lowville Baptist Church, at the Lewis County General Hospital in the gift shop and at the Head to Toe thrift shop for the Lowville Council of Churches.
She also enjoyed sewing for the Women’s Circle of Lowville Mennonite Church helping make quilts for mission, loved crocheting and other crafts, which she often sold to benefit Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society having been a cancer survivor since 1994.
Surviving are her, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by seven brothers, Amos, Ernest, Chris, Ervin, Andrew, Lawrence and Clayton Widrick and two sisters, Nina Monnat and Anna Mae Roes.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 30th at 11:00 A.M. at Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Runner, Pastor of the Lowville Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Woodville Cemetery in Woodville on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 P.M.
