In 1764, John Moseley Haden would be about fifteen years old when his parents moved further west about 10 miles, from Byrd Creek in Goochland/Albemarle Counties to the Dogspoint tract that encompassed 1150 acres on the Rivanna at Burkie's Creek in Albemarle County. Three years later, John's father extended his holdings by purchasing another 2300 acres in the Cunningham Creek watershed just south of Dogspoint, from his neighbor Samuel Hopkins - the son and executor of the deceased estate of John's daughter Mary's father-in-law Arthur Hopkins Sr., who was also a good friend of Thomas Jefferson's father - Peter Jefferson, who had served with Arthur in the Virginia House of Burgess. This 1767 transaction gave John's father a border with a 350 acre parcel that Thomas Jefferson was granted in 1763, by King George III of England and the Colonial Lieutenant Governor of Virginia - Francis Fauquier. Like his brother Joseph who remained in Fluvanna County until his death, John Mosley Haden did the same.

John first married about 1770 to Anne. Her maiden name is unknown due to lost marriage records of Albemarle Co from 1743 to 1780. Anne died before 7 Dec 1790, since this is when John got remarried to Mary (Flanagan) Hopkins, the likely widow of Peter Hopkins.

★ 6 Aug 1771: John's father deeded him 400 acres of land on the South side of the Rivanna River, where he was already living - Albemarle Co Deed Book 5, p.356 . In Aug 1777, this part of Albemarle County became Fluvanna County. The attached 1860 map shows two separate homes located on the Dogspoint tract then, as being occupied by John Moseley Haden's daughter and son-in-law; "Mrs. Haden", aka Margaret or Peggy Douglas Haden and "William Lane".

Also on 4 Sep 1777, his brothers Anthony & Joseph were named Captains.

★ 7 Apr 1797: A notation in Thomas Jefferson's account billing records indicate:
"Left with Colo[nel] Bell for T. Walker £8–13–10 balance of acct. due for mares to the "Jack, with an additional margin note saying "Jack Jouett had in his life time recd. from JOHN M. HADEN as security for (his brother) ANTHONY HADEN in Fluvanna £14–2–8 the amount of my judgmt. against him. He being at the same time authorized to receive from me the balance due to Donald, Scot & Co. (which on balancing all accts. would be £7–14–11½ with int. from the peace Apr. 19. [17]83. till paid) I authorized him to consider the money when recd. as paid to Donald Scot & co. of which I notified Colo. Morris this day that he might apply to Fletcher admr. of Jouett."

Jack Jouett was the "Paul Revere of the South". He was well acquainted with Anthony Haden whose 3rd wife was one of Jacks' maternal aunts - Anna (Harris) Dabney. Notwithstanding, Jack Jouett's Family Bible has also been the provenance of much of this Haden line's birth, death and marriage info, by way of Jack's daughter - Elizabeth Jouett marrying Anthony Haden's son - William Dabney Haden. Yet to be documented, was Jack Jouett's birthdate confirmed in the same Bible?

This John [Moseley] Haden is the most likeliest who was referred to in the following letters written by then Vice President Thomas Jefferson, in regards to John Haden taking three Chickasaw Indian Ambassadors from Staunton VA to Richmond and Philadelphia, to meet with U.S. Representatives about two prior treaties: 1) made with Virginia in 1783 and 2) made with the U.S. in 1786. This "John Haden" would highly likely NOT be either John Haden - the father, or John Haden the nephew - s/o Anthony; since they had both moved to Campbell County, 100 miles to the southwest, 15 years prior. John Moseley Haden's brother was Joseph Haden, who was then serving in the Virginia House of Burgess, a likely liaison who had the ability to coordinate with Virginia Governor & Vice-President Thomas Jefferson.

There were three governors within a two month time frame at the end of 1799, the third being James Monroe, which is the likely reason VP Jefferson became involved in the issue. Considering the legal work Jefferson had done for John Moseley Haden's 1) Father John Haden Sr., 2) Brother Anthony and 3) Uncle Zachariah, the family was well known and connected to Jefferson. In Jefferson's billing records & legal memorandums, this "JOHN M. HADEN" is specifically listed as the one holding collateral for a debt of Anthony Haden, his brother owed to Jefferson for previous work Jefferson had done for Anthony.

★ 28 Nov 1799: To James Wood [from] Monticello 28 Nov 1799
"Sir, Three Chickasaw Indians have called on me, without any guide with them, any interpreter, or any document authorizing their entrance or passage through the state except a pass from an officer at Staunton. Had the county lieutenant or any other field officer militia been within reach I should have applied to them to take charge of them & have them conducted to Richmond, from whence I understand they mean to proceed to Philadelphia. But no such offer happens to be in this part of the county. In this situation I am obliged to take on myself to engage a careful person the bearer JOHN HADEN to go with them to Richmond, to take care of them, to procure subsistence for them on the road, and have ventured to give it to him as my opinion that your Excellency will have him paid for his trouble & repay the necessary expenses of their journey, while under his care, which commences here. The irregularity of their entrance being already committed , and they being actually here, I know no other way disposing of them for their own safety & the public peace, but that which I adopt, & I hope these circumstances will plead my excuse for intermeddling in a case totally foreign to me, of which however it would not be easy to make them sensible. I furnish him sixteen dollars towards necessaries for them on the road. I have the honor to be with due respect Your Excellency's most O'bedt. & most humble servt." Signed Th. Jefferson

Given under my hand this 28th. day of November 1799." Signed Th. Jefferson

★ 21 Dec 1799: Jefferson's financial memorandums: "Jefferson gave HADEN $15.75." He records receipt of $16.00 "from the Governor" of Virginia, who then was James Monroe. Wilson Carey Nicholas brought the money from Richmond. A letter from James Wood to Jefferson is dated 4 Dec, and recorded as received on 7 Dec in "SJL".

Along with her sister Nancy, Peggy likely inherited a plat on the Dogspoint tract where her Grandfather - John Haden Sr. originally settled in 1764-5, as the 1863 Map of Fluvanna County land holders shows her home located above the southwest banks of "Dogspoint" on the Rivanna River, where it's documented John originally settled and where it's likely the earliest of Haden burials would exist. The Haden Family Cemetery at Pleasant Grove has documented kin buried there, no earlier than 1862.

John Moseley Haden on 7 Dec 1790 in Louisa County VA married to
+♡ Mary Ann (Flanagan) Hopkins: was the likely widow of Peter Hopkins who was living on Bunch Creek, in Louisa County - Source: "Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families" pp. 180-1. Per contributor (46954069) Becky Thames-Simmons, " I'm 99% certain that John's second wife was Mary (Flanagan) Hopkins, daughter of James Flanagan and his wife Sevena Whittal. Mary Flanagan was first married to Peter Hopkins. When he died in 1790, he named Mary as his executrix and two sons of James - Ambrose and James - were security for her bond as executrix. When she remarried to John M Haden, another brother - Whittle Flanagan - gave security for the marriage bond. Later, John M Hayden and Mary Ann his wife, noted as widow of Peter Hopkins, sold 200 acres of land in Louisa Co VA to Ambrose Flanagan."

John Mosley Haden and Mary Hopkins were married by Rev. John Lasley. Witnesses were Whittle Flanagan, Samuel Harris, William Haden [John's 18 yr old son].

According to a letter from Socrates Haden, great grandson of John Moseley, three children of ♥4)George Haden who died in Alabama were sent for and raised by Peggy, who had considerable land & slave holdings in 1860.

Gratitude and credit to Kay Haden for her insightful compilation, Leaves of the Tree, where she has documented in expanded detail upon Dorothy Kabler Haden's work John Haden of Virginia (1968). Much of this biography incorporates Kay's thorough analysis of facts and tradition, which has been instrumental in finding the home locations and likely resting places of John Moseley Haden and many of his kin.
