US Congressman. He attended Granville College, worked on his family's farm, and spent several years clearing land in Union County, Ohio for agriculture. While studying law, he continued his agricultural pursuits until 1847, when he began to perform duties as a land appraiser and assessor of Union County. He was admitted to the bar in Ohio and became an attorney in Marysville. He was a delegate to the State Constitutional Conventions held in 1850 and 1851. He also became the proprietor and editor of the "Marysville Tribune" from 1850 to 1853. As a member of the Ohio State Senate in 1856 and 1857, he was the chairman on a committee to investigate fraud in public works. Appointed by President Abraham Lincoln, he became the assessor of the 8th Congressional District of Ohio when the Internal Revenue Act of 1862 was placed into operation, and served until 1866, when he was removed by President Andrew Johnson. Later in 1866, he was elected as a Republican to represent Ohio's 8th District in the United States House of Representatives. He worked on Reconstruction issues while a member of Congress and published a pamphlet in favor of extending suffrage to all men in America, regardless of race. He returned to his home when he was notified by his wife that their son, Thomas, was suddenly affected with spasms of insane behavior. After making arrangements to remove him to an asylum, his son violently retaliated and beat Hamilton to death with a wooden plank. He was killed a week before he would have been 47 years old. A cenotaph was erected in his honor at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington D.C. (located in the cemetery in Range 59, Site 97).
