The son of George & Harriet (Wentz) Epley, in 1850 he lived with his family in Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he and sister Sarah lived with and/or worked for farmer Frederick Peiffer in Freedom Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 6" tall with dark hair and gray eyes and never married.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Co. B, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry. During the final months of his service, he was detached to the brigade as a teamster, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.
A milkman found him dead in his bed. Witnesses testified to hearing his complaints of chest pain the night before, so his obituary surmised it was a heart attack even though his death certificate officially list no known reason for his death.
