He attained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas and following graduation, he was trained as a fighter pilot with the United States Navy. After several years as a test pilot, he joined NASA in 1963 and went on to serve as a backup crewman for the Gemini 10 (1966) and later Apollo 9 (1969) missions. On November 19, 1969, Bean served as the Lunar Module pilot on the Apollo 12 mission commanded by Pete Conrad, which also included Richard Gordon. Conrad and Bean respectively, became the third and fourth men to walk on the moon. In July 1973, Bean served as commander of the second crew to inhabit the Skylab and over a 59 day period, important data and experiments were conducted. Bean retired from the Navy in 1975 and remained with NASA until his retirement in 1981. He went on to become an accomplished painter who created works from his space expeditions.
