Helen Marian Mead Van Auken, eldest daughter of Hannah and Daniel P. Mead, was born in the town of Boylston, May 22, 1846 and went home to Jesus, October 23, 1917, at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 1 day. On November 14, 1867, she was united in marriage to Ira M. Van Auken of Boylston, N.Y., to which union was born one child, Mrs. Oliver De Long of Sandy Creek.

She was converted on the Baxter camp ground over 40 years ago from which time she has lived a very consistent and devoted life. Shortly after her conversion she and her husband united with the W.M. church of Boylston of which she was a member at the time of her death.

She was a very devoted and loving wife and mother. Those who knew her best, loved her most. While she had been afflicted with rheumatism for a number of years and continually growing worse, yet through it all she wore a smile, giving words of cheer and comfort to all she met. In her last hours she proved her faith in Jesus by testifying to the end telling of the Holy Spirit and shouting Glory! Glory! Glory! and saying "Ye, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me" Then calling her loved ones to her bedside asked them all to meet her in heaven.

Those who are left to mourn her loss are her husband and only daughter, Mrs. Oliver De Long of Sandy Creek, N.Y., two granddaughters, Mrs. C.F. Hurst, Chambers, N.Y., Mrs. V.D. Gorton, Lacona, N.Y., two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Lounsbury, Lacona, N.Y., Mrs. Frank (Gladdie)Robbins, Boylston, N.Y., three brothers, E.H. Mead, Boylston, N.Y., E.J. Mead, Lacona, N.Y., E.D. Mead, Boylston, N.Y.

The funeral was held at her late home in Sandy Creek, Friday, Oct 26, at 1 p. m., officiated by her pastor, Rev. P.L. Presley, using for his text, II Timothy, 4:6-7.
