Percy was a Staff Sergeant in the 422nd Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomber Group, of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as a waist gunner aboard a B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber. Percy's plane was shot down over France, and he was listed as missing in action.

DNA tests have recently confirmed the remains found in a French cemetery are those of Percy. Returned home after 75 years, Percy Clayton Mathews is now buried at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL.
