Mississippi Governor. After spending his early years in the newspaper business, Murphree entered politics, being elected in 1911 to represent Calhoun County in the state legislature, where he served for twelve years. In 1923 he was elected Lieutenant Governor, an office he held three different times. Unsuccessful in three gubernatorial campaigns, Murphree nevertheless served twice as Governor, a fact that led to his being included in Ripley's Believe It Or Not. In both cases he was Lieutenant Governor when a Governor died in office, Gov. Henry L. Whitfield in 1927 and Gov. Paul B. Johnson in 1943. Murphree is probably best remembered for having established "pay-as-you-go" state budgeting and for his involvement with the "Know Mississippi Better" train, a train that traveled the country showcasing Mississippi products.
