Charles Davies was born about 1706 in England or Wales and died 13 May 1801 in Cane Creek, Chatham County, North Carolina. He married Hannah Matson 9 February 1733 in Radnor Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of John and Margaret Matson. She was born 1720 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and died 28 October 1812.

Charles came from England or Wales and was indentured to a Quaker family in Philadelphia to pay for his voyage. He appears in Quaker Monthly Meeting records, but it is unknown if he was Quaker prior to living with the Quaker family.

Charles went by the name "Davies", but is referred to as "Davis" in some records. His son, Thomas dropped the "e" to become Davis. The Davies name was carried down through Charles' son, John and to some of John's children.

After their marriage, Charles and Hannah Davies moved from Pennsylvania to the Hopewell Monthly Meeting, what is now Frederick County, Virginia. In or before 1750, Charles and Hannah moved from Virginia to what is now northwest Chatham County, North Carolina.

In 1761, Charles was recorded as a Quaker minister. Five years later he was disowned by the Monthly Meeting of Friends. The entry stated that he had complained that the women's minutes were "mixed with an untruth." This may have to do with the disownment of his daughter, Mary Moffitt. She was among a group of women living on Deep River who participated in the marriage contrary to the discipline of Amy Husband.

Charles and Hannah had the following children:

+ Mary Davis (married William Moffitt)

+ Thomas Davis Sr. (born about 1734; died about 1804)

+ John Davis (born 28 Sep 1735 in Haverford Township, Chester
County, Pennsylvania; died 21 Nov 1806 in North Carolina)

+ Elizabeth Davis (born 12 Dec 1737 in Haverford Township, Chester
County, Pennsylvania; married Thomas Vestal about 1754)

+ Sarah Davis (born about 1739 in Haverford Township, Chester
County, Pennsylvania; married Thomas Cox about 1760)

+ Hannah Davis (born 14 May 1744; married Hugh Moffitt about 1768)

+ Thamer Davis (born 11 Apr 1749; married Thomas Cox about 1771)

+ Abigal Davis (born 14 May 1751 in Orange County, North Carolina; married (1) Owen Williams; married (2) Abraham Ozbun about 1774)
