Jerry M. Michels, 80, of Olney, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.
He was born on January 21, 1938 in Olney, IL, the son of Myrl "Moon" and Ruth (Heap) Michels.
He married Sue (Schnautz) on November 10, 1984 in Olney, IL. She survives him.
Jerry was the general manager at Illinois Gas Company where he worked for 30+ years. He was an active member of the Olney Elks #926 and the Eagles Lodge #2549. Jerry enjoyed beating his friends playing cards at the Petroleum Club and dominating them in dominoes at the Elks. He served on several boards including the Olney/Noble Airport, Workforce One, and RCDC during the time in which Wal-Mart DC and the Lawrenceville prison were brought to this area. Jerry enjoyed watching sports of all kinds but was passionate about STL Cardinals baseball and U of I basketball. He took pleasure in keeping up with his grandchildren through social media.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Sue Michels of Olney; daughter, Julie Roberts and husband Greg of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter, Cathy Yockey of Olney; daughter, Lori Barger and husband Ed of Olney; son, Greg Michels of Olney; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, brother, Jim (Kathy) Michels of Olney; sister, Judy Lawrence of Glenview, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Tera Bonds; and step-son, Phillip Schnautz.
Memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Olney.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2018 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney with burial following in Crest Haven Cemetery.
