John Lewis Gilmer, 80, of Swoope, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018, at the home of his brother and sister-in-law in Staunton. Mr. Gilmer was born on May 9, 1938, in Augusta County, a son of the late Ernest E. and Lillie (Moore) Gilmer.

John was a proud veteran of the United States Army, he retired from Westinghouse / McQuay after 37 years of service as an assembler, and he had a life-long love for farming and hunting.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mabel Miller, Louise Harlow, Frances Gordon, and Helen Gilmer; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Gilmer.

Surviving are three brothers, Junior E. Gilmer and George E. Gilmer and his wife, Shirley, both of Staunton, and Warren H. Gilmer and his wife, Barbara of Waynesboro; a sister, Betty G. Piner of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018, in the Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. William "Bill" Trice. The family will receive friends following the service.

The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to Mr. Gilmer's brother and sister-in-law, George and Shirley for their love, kindness, care and support during his illness.
