Susan D. (Allen) "Dixie" Clark
June 23, 1937 - May 20, 2018
Melrose, Massachusetts | Age 80

Susan D. (Allen) "Dixie" Clark, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 20, 2018 after a long battle with cancer at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading. She lived 80 full years of life.

Born on June 23, 1937 in Melrose, she was one of three children of the late Ralph W. Allen and Helen W. Allen. Susan, who was known as "Dixie" from the time she was born, was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1955. She graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, Middlesex Community College, and received her Master's degree at age 50 from Simmons College.

Dixie began her working career in publishing as a typesetter for the Melrose Free Press at an early age. She continued her work in print production at Addison Wesley Publishing, and later Book Production Services. With a love for the publishing field, Dixie then established her own company operating from her home in Melrose known as DCP or Dixie Clark Productions. It was a job she loved, requiring creativity and precise organization, both of which she excelled at. Dixie moved onto working in science analytics for TASC, and continued offering her expertise as a consultant for Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. With her vast experience and specialized knowledge of book publishing, Dixie served as President of Bookbuilders of Boston.

A Melrose native, Dixie cared deeply about her community. She was a member of the Friends of the Melrose Public Library, Friends of the Beebe Estate, and served as Treasurer of Melrose Arts and Cultural Association. A longtime and active member of Trinity Church in Melrose, she served on the property committee and a member of the vestry. Dixie always offered her creative organizational skills with a smile, and was ready to help whether fabricating a new sign for Trinity Church or landscaping the gardens at the Beebe Estate.

Dixie was a passionate artist with a love for painting, especially the ocean waters along the North Shore of Boston. With over 2,000 pieces of artwork, Dixie shared her collection in art exhibits from Melrose to Gloucester and was well known for her support of the art community. She served on the Board of the North Shore Art Association, and Rockport Art Association.

In her free time, Dixie enjoyed skiing, gardening, stained glass, pottery, reading, art shows, boating, and traveling throughout the world. She visited Spain, Germany, Japan, Thailand and even sailed in Fiji. With a love for golfing, she volunteered at local PGA tournaments. She also loved returning to Cape Cod where she grew up going with her parents.

Dixie was an outgoing, determined, free spirit throughout her well lived 80 years. She was kind hearted, and generously gave of her time and her support for others. Family-oriented, she cared deeply for her grandchildren whom she doted on and helped care for. Dixie will be greatly missed, but her spirit and love for life will carry on with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Dixie was the devoted mother of Debra S. Harter and her husband Brad of Lima, OH, H. Briggs Clark IV of Seabrook, NH and Michael A. Clark of Melrose. Dear sister of the late Ralph and John Allen. Cherished grandmother of Devra Najera and her husband Matt, Jonathan Clark, Jessica Harter, Tyler Clark and the late Lyndsey Clark. Also survived by 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Dixie's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, May 24 from 4-8pm, and for her Funeral Service at Trinity Church, 131 W. Emerson St., Melrose celebrated on Friday at 10am. Gifts in Dixie's memory may be made to Trinity Church, 131 W. Emerson St., Melrose MA 02176, or to the Sawtelle Family Hospice House, c/o Lahey Philanthropy, 41 Mall Rd., Burlington MA 01805.
