Martha Wilson Wise peacefully departed this life on May 18, 2018, surrounded by loved ones in her home.

Born on February 28, 1926 to Lourine and George Wilson in Denison, Texas.

Her father moved the family to Beaumont in 1933, where he opened George Wilson’s Men’s Store downtown at the corner of Crockett and Pearl. After graduating from Beaumont High, she received her degree in Fine Arts from the University of Texas where she studied under Charles Umlauf. Martha was an avid painter and sculptor, having exhibited in Beaumont, who spread joy to many a lucky parent who commissioned her portraits and sculptures of their children.

The legacy of Martha and George Wise is a love story full of tenderness, steadfastness and wit. Their life together began as a blind date arranged by her cousin Sonny Wilson, who had flown missions over Europe with George in WWII. They were married three months later, following her marriage proposal that came by way of a telegram: "Dear George, have had wedding invitations printed for Aug 29. Would love to have you in my wedding.” His acceptance read “ Believe me, I will definitely be at your wedding. I love you.”

Soon after starting their married life in Shreveport, Louisiana, Martha and George moved to Beaumont, where they raised three children and made a world of lifelong friends. Martha was funny, loyal, talented, brave and generous. An avid fisherwoman, she taught all her grandchildren how to fish. Her cooking defined her with her grandchildren and friends. Her legendary country breakfasts in Woodville as well as her jellies and pickles were the highlights of family visits. Her blackberry cobblers became the most awaited holiday presents in town, only second to her and George’s hand-drawn and clever Christmas cards featuring creative self-caricatures, which became collector’s items for their friends.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband George, her brother Thomas R. Wilson, her sister Elizabeth N. Wilson and her brother-in-law and sister -in-law Lilbourn and Virginia Morgan.

She is survived by her son Scott Wise and wife Geraldina of Houston, her daughter Christie Wise of Beaumont and daughter Betsy Nelson and husband Hunter of Houston, her grandchildren Hunter Nelson, Jr. and wife Jane of NYC, Emily Nelson of Houston, Jack Nelson of Austin, Maggie Brown and husband Derreck of Dripping Springs, Texas, Gabriella Wise of Houston, and Scott H. Wise of NYC, great-granddaughters Mackenna and Dakota Brown, as well as her brother-in-law Wes Wise and wife Sally of Eustace, Texas.

The family is deeply grateful to Rosa Bennett, Lucia Dowell, Chris Squez, and Lana Borque for their many years of friendship, care, love and devotion.

Funeral services will be held at 11am Monday, May 21, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Beaumont.

Serving as pallbearers will be Martha’s grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Wes Wise, Charles Locke, Armando Interiano, Wynford Wise, Westley Wise, Wendy Calvert, Ann Morgan, Thomas Wilson, Michael Wilson, David R. Nelson, III, James K. Nelson, John Henry Nelson, William Nelson, Knox Fitzpatrick and Michael Fitzpatrick.
