George Rutherford Thompson, 78, of 166 Sardis Road, Asheville, died Sunday, November 28, 1999.

Mr. Thompson was born in Asheville and was a son of the late Lon R. and Shirley Rutherford Thompson. He was married to Eula Mae Scott Thompson, who died July 15, 1999, and was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Alice Thompson. He was an Air Force Veteran of WW II and retired in 1977 after 30 years with American Enka. He was a member of Reeves Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, George M. and Linda Thompson and Ricky and Dannette Thompson, all of Asheville; two sisters, Margaret Massie and Nancy Waugh and two brothers, Fred Thompson and Cecil Thompson, all of Asheville, and four grandchildren, Jackie Clark, Barbara Knapp and George Thompson III, all of Asheville, and Lon Thompson of Page, AZ; three great-grandchildren, Daniel and Mary Beth Clark and Lee Thompson, and one great-great-grandson.

Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Revs. Phillip Hurst and Steve Plemmons officiating.
