Rev. James Willie Frierson, Sr. was born on April 8, 1939 to the late Sammy and Etta Frierson in Poplar Grove, AR. During his childhood, he was known as “Bone,” because of his very thin framed body.
He was nurtured by his maternal aunt and uncle, the late Willie Mae and Robert Goldsberry.

He was educated in the Oneida and Marvel school systems and worked as a farmer, barber, and Maintenance Supervisor for the West Helena Housing Authority. He also volunteered with the local chapter of Operational Emergency Services (OES).

J.W. accepted Christ as his Savior at a young age at the St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, Kendall Spur(Lake Ridge), AR. In 1971, he accepted the call to preach the gospel and pastored several churches in the community, Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist, Lexa; New Hope Missionary Baptist, LaGrange; Freedonia Missionary Baptist, West Helena; and the Second Baptist Church, Lexa, until his health began to fail but continued as a faithful member.

Rev. Frierson was united in holy matrimony to Bealice McClurge in 1959. To this union seven children were born, two preceded him in death, David and Terry Frierson.
He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Simon and Julie Ann Frierson, parents, and his siblings, Robert Lee Moore, Herman Houston, Ernestine Gross, Edward Frierson, and Felicia Frierson.

Rev. Frierson affectively known as “Popeye” by his grandchildren loved spending time with them, whether wrestling, racing or just making them laugh. Whatever activity they were involved in, he made a point to be supportive even during his failing health.

On Saturday, July 23, 2011, God called J.W. to eternal rest…..
“You have fought a good fight, you have finished your race, and you have kept the faith.”
