Our loving husband, father and grandfather, Ronald Baer Hammond, passed away peacefully at age 70 while at home May 13, 2018, following a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Logan, Utah, on Feb. 13, 1948, to Seymour and Mary Jean (Hess) Hammond. Ron attended school in Logan and graduated from Logan High School. He was also a proud Aggie.

Ron served his first mission for The in Australia beginning in 1967. He later served a couple's mission with his wife Susan in the Washington Everett Mission, Naval Station. At the time of his death Ron and Susan were serving as senior couple missionaries at the USU Institute with a special needs class.

Upon returning from his first mission, Ron joined the Utah Army National Guard and served 21 years. He was deployed to various locations: Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and finally as a chaplain's assistant in Iraq. He had a profound love of serving his country.

Ron met Susan Hislop and - after finally convincing her mother that, indeed, he was good enough for Susie - married her Aug. 30, 1972, in the Logan LDS Temple. They have been blessed with four children and 10 grandchildren (so far).

His career path led him to the management ranks at Grand Central of Logan (where Smith's Marketplace now stands). He left Grand Central to work for the family business: Hammond Distributing. Ron sold candy to "mom and pop" gas stations and small stores around the valley and was well known as the "Candyman." After selling the business, he spent the rest of his career as a custodian for the LDS Church.

He served in many different callings for the church, from Bishop to Nursery leader. One of his favorite callings was serving as Bishop of a Utah State University Single Adult ward, which enabled his two loves to come together - his love for the gospel and of Aggie sports. He was lucky enough to have several student athletes in his flock and always made a point to say "hi" at any of the events in which they played.

His family was very important to him. He taught his children how to serve and have an unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, and three children: Melissa (Bruce deceased) Giddings Logan; Brandon (Charisa) Boardman, Oregon; and Mikell (Nick) Brown, Nibley; his 10 grandchildren: Mackenzie, Rebecca and Jeremy Giddings; Mary, Matthew, Nathan, Seth and Isaac Hammond; and Paizley and Kennedy Brown; three sisters: Sandy (Larry) Adams Providence; Shauna, Nibley; and Cindy (Steve) Denning, Logan; in addition to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce, brothers-in-law: Dennis Taylor, Troy Nielsen and Allan Rodgers; mother-in-law: Teddy Hislop; son-in-law Bruce Giddings and his daughter Anita.

Under the direction of Bishop Michael Miller, funeral services will be held Friday, May 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Foothill 2nd Ward building, 1450 E. 1500 North, Logan. There will be a viewing held Thursday, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., in Logan, also, prior to the funeral service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Foothill 2nd Ward building. Interment to follow in the Logan City Cemetery with Military Honors.
