Carol Lea Goodwin of St. Louis, Missouri died peacefully on Tuesday September 26, 2017 after a short illness at the age of 90. She was born July 2, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa to Hilda Justina Atzen May and Kenneth Merritt May.
She attended Bryon Rice Grade School, Callanan Junior High School, and Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa where she graduated in 1945.
Carol loved her cello and took lessons at Byron Rice Grade School and also from Mary Sexton. She played in Mary Sexton's Tri Clef Ensemble and the Drake University Symphony Orchestra. She also received musical instruction from Dr. John Erlich.
In August 1948, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, with a BA in Chemistry and English Liberal Arts, and in 1950 she graduated with a MA in Biology.
In 1948 She married James Alonzo Goodwin at First Methodist Church in Des Moines. On June 12, 1951 she gave birth to Sheryl Lee and on May 4, 1953 she gave birth to her second daughter Janis Kay.
Carol worked as a Lab Instructor at Drake University in 1948 and until moving to St. Louis, Missouri in 1958. Once in St. Louis, she worked part time for 7 years at the Washington University Medical School Hematology Department, and then full time for 20 years in their Gastroenterology Department. She happily retired in 1990 at the age of 63. Carol then worked for the Lutheran Convalescent Home part time on Saturdays and for Preferred Health Care as a home health aide.
After her move to St. Louis, Carol continued playing her beloved cello, first with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, and then with the Kirkwood Symphony. Later she joined Father Austin’s St. Louis University Chamber Group that met at The Priory.
Carol is survived by her ex-husband James Alonzo Goodwin, daughter Janis Kay Sidberry, daughter Sheryl Lee Schafers (Stephen), grandson Daniel Schafers (Erin), and grandson Jeffrey Schafers (Elizabeth), and great-grandson Nathan Schafers, and her sister Marilyn Evans of Plano Texas, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was a caring and empathetic friend to many.
Memorial Visitation for family and friends will be Mon., Oct. 2, from 4-7 pm at BOPP CHAPEL, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood, and there will be a private service later.
