Joseph Slater Warner, 92, Lanter Court, Osceola, passed away Thursday, surrounded by his family.
He was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Elkhart, to Jesse E. and Anna Mae (Slater) Warner, who both preceded him in death along with his brothers and sisters, Wilfred W. Warner, Rhea Juday, Mary Houghton, Janet Cook and Ned Warner.
Joe was a veteran of World War II, who served honorably in the United States Navy.
He married the former B. Rosalie Morgan in Elkhart in 1951.
He and his brother, Ned, opened Warner Funeral Home in Osceola in 1950 and after 36 years, retired in 1986, followed by several years working for Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Homes in Goshen and Wakarusa.
He was an avid fisherman his entire life and was very proud of the northern pike he caught on the St. Joseph River. Although he would not divulge exactly where the fish was caught, he did tell close family members, swearing them to secrecy. He would give pictures of the fish to whoever would ask about it and many who didn't ask got one anyway.
He was a member of Osceola United Methodist Church and the former Masonic Lodge in Osceola. He also was a member of the Michiana Walleye Club in Mishawaka.
He is survived by his wife, Rosie, and his two children, Lynn (Butch) Winkler, Land-o-Lakes, Florida, and Mark (Sue) Warner, Osceola.
He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ruth Ann Warner.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, Heather (James Geldbaugh) Winkler, Michelle (Mike) DeLaney, Adam (Amy) Warner and Geoffrey (Bethany) Warner. Seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will take place at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, Tuesday, May 22, at 11 a.m., where friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday.
Burial will follow at Olive Cemetery West.
The family would like to thank all the employees of the Hearth at Juday Creek and Harbor Light Hospice for the loving care provided to Joe.
