MRS. C. C. SCHUTZ, MACKSBURG, DIES

Was Prominent Woman in That Community for Many Years

Mrs. Calvin C. Schutz, a widely known resident of the Macksburg community for many years, died Sept. 27 at her home near Macksburg. She was 74 years of age.

Mrs. Schutz was the former Bertha Means, daughter of Lewis F. and Anna Weeks Means, and was born April 11, 1872, near Clarksdale, Mo.

Practically all her life was spent in Madison county. She attended the Winterset high school, and for 10 years was a teacher in the schools of Madison and Union counties.

On March 26, 1899, she was married to Calvin C. Schutz. They established their home near Macksburg, where she lived the remainder of her life.

As a child she joined the Methodist church at Kasson, where she served as Sunday school teacher. She never lost her interest in school work, and in recent years served as president of the Parent-Teacher association at Macksburg. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Rebekahs, and was active in Farm Bureau and Woman's club work.

She is survived by her husband; five children, Fay Schutz, Calvin A. Schutz and Mrs. Marie Wood, all of Macksburg, Mrs. Esther Varley of Stuart, and Mrs. Fern Moore of Griswold; 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Ivan M. Means of Lorimor, and Andrew V. Means of Lincoln, Nebr.; and two sisters, Mrs. Louella Heizer of Essex and Mrs. Ethel Blessing of Seattle, Wash.

Funeral services were held Sept. 30 in charge of her former pastor, the Rev. M. D. Summerbell, assisted by the Rev. C. A. Calkins of the Macksburg Methodist church. Burial was made in the Moon cemetery at Macksburg.
