He was Chief of Police and along with Patrolman Owen Lockamy was killed in the line of duty. They along with another officer tried to make an arrest involving the illegal selling of whiskey. The man fired upon all the officers as they entered his home. The Chief died the following day, and Patrolman Lockamy died at the scene.

Sergeant Daniel Chason, nephew to Chief, was also killed in the line of duty.
